Can you believe school has started or is about to start?! So crazy that we’re already over half-way through August. Plaid is always the biggest on-trend pattern for Fall and comes in a crazy-wide variety of colors and patterns (you know…gingham vs flannel, etc.). Since the cooler Fall season is fast-approaching, read along with me to find out how to style plaid shirts!
How to Style Plaid Shirts – Speaking of Gingham…
First things first… Gingham plaid is different from “regular” plaid in that it is white plus just one other color, and the lines are all the same width. Now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s look at how I’ve styled this first outfit!
I took this navy (and white!) gingham shirt from Gap and paired it with this new-to-the-shop grey chiffon skirt from Loft. I love the preppiness of the shirt mixed with the femininity of the skirt. Add some gold accessories and simple black wedges to finish it off!
If you want to dress the gingham shirt down a little, you can wear it with a colored skinny pant like these burgundy skinnies from Mossimo. Burgundy and navy obviously look amazing together, and the stretchy skinny pants are super comfortable. For shoes, you can go a dressier route with these trendy studded flats, or more casual with a pair of white slip-ons from Urban Outfitters (for under $20!).
To accessorize this outfit, you could go with silver or gold, but I love the way the gold pops with the darker colors. Plus it matches the shoes. 🙂 The bangle bracelet in the photo is from Kinsley Armelle. It’s on sale for $15.99 right now, but you can get another 15% off (of everything, all the time!) by using promo code NDB15OFF at checkout! Shipping is roughly $3-4, and it got here in just a few days!
How to Style Plaid Shirts – Plaid Popovers
Popovers have been very on-trend the last couple years. Add a plaid pattern and you have the perfect shirt for Fall! I love this purple, black and burgundy plaid popover from Old Navy. It looks great with denim and would also go perfectly with black leggings or white skinnies! For the first outfit I wanted to give you a great Pre-Fall (the time transitioning from Summer to Fall…) option. I added these denim shorts from Loft which gives a casual-chic vibe, then adding the tan booties makes it feel more like Fall. (Not quite sure about wearing long sleeves and shorts with boots? Check out this outfit from Pinterest.) These boots are my own (Sorry!), but I’ve chosen nine pair of awesome booties for you to shop through directly from the retailer…and they’re all under $50!
The second outfit for the plaid popover is still on the casual side, but a little more “Fall”. If you haven’t heard, you can totally wear white year-round!!! No more of this “No white after Labor Day” nonsense! These white boyfriend jeans are super on-trend and look great with the purple plaid popover.
See that gorgeous wooden watch? It’s from JORD Watches and you can read a full review and enter a giveaway for $75 off your next watch by going here. The gold bracelet next to it is the Arrison bracelet from Stella & Dot.
How to Style Plaid Shirts – Plaid doesn’t have to be casual!
Typically when you think of Fall and plaid, you are likely thinking of a flannel-type pattern on a button-down shirt or blanket scarf. This blue plaid blouse is from CAbi and is a beautiful sheer light blue color. It’s very easy to dress up. Just throw on a white cami or tank and a skirt! For this outfit I chose this denim skirt from Lauren Ralph Lauren. The slightly frayed hem gives it an updated appearance and the color looks great with the plaid top. For shoes, you can go with a nude flat like in the photo, or go with a simple black wedge or pump.
This plaid shirt outfit is still dressed up, but has a casual flare. Again using the sheer plaid top, I added these RockStar skinnies from Old Navy. I love the zipper openings! They look amazing with pumps. Need an extra layer for those colder nights? Add a long black open cardigan to match the shoes!
I’m definitely a Summer-loving girl, but I have to admit…Fall is my favorite season as far as fashion is concerned! I can’t wait to break out the long-sleeved tunics and sweaters and my favorite scarves and boots!!! Which of these looks was your favorite? Is one speaking to you louder than the others? Tell me below!
